Nose Operation

Nose Surgery

Aesthetic nose operation, rhinoplasty, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries reshaping the cartilage and bone of the nose to achieve a desired look for men and women. Nose reshaping surgery or nose job can greatly improve the balance of facial features, helping patients increasing confidence when performed by an experienced, skilled cosmetic surgeon. Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct structural defects, including those that cause breathing problems.

Most of patients undergoing nose surgery are unhappy with the shape of their nose, a smaller percentage have breathing problems due to structural abnormalities or previous nose injuries. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are in good general health, knowing the risks associated with surgery, having realistic expectations regarding the results. Problem can be a nose that’s large or wide in comparison with other facial features, bump on the bridge, nasal tip deformity (droopy, protruding, enlarged, bulbous) nostrils that are flaring or pinched, nose that is crooked, asymmetry after an injury, breathing problems due to abnormalities inside the nose (deviated septum or related problems)

Rhinoplasty can be done at the age 14-15 in girls and a bit later in boys due to the facial growth theorically, but best is doing it after 18 to ensure that it’s the patient's own choice and is aware of pros and cons of the operation.

Aesthetic Plastic surgeons and ENT surgeons who has been certified by the government of health can legally permitted to perform rhinoplasty, but a qualified surgeon can ensure safety and good cosmetic results. Candidates should choose a surgeon who focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, If possible, a surgeon who's specialized in facial procedures and nose reshaping. Even if the patient will have the procedure for cosmetic reasons only, surgeon must protect the nasal passages for normal breathing at the end. Patients should never choose a doctor who makes unrealistic promises.

During the consultation, surgeon will do the examination, assess medical history, skin quality, shape, the condition of the septum, cosmetic problems, and mental preparedness of the candidate, asks about medications and whether the patient smokes before recommending a treatment.  It is essential for the candidate to be honest with the doctor, giving certain information could increase the risk of surgical complications. Smoking does not necessarily disqualify a patient from rhinoplasty, but he or she will need to stop for at least two weeks before and two weeks after the procedure to decrease the wound healing problem risks. Additionally, certain medications can inhibit healing. If possible, doctor may recommend safer alternatives. Candidates should ask about the approach to rhinoplasty (closed or open).

Getting prepared for the operation: blood tests must be done, medications for chronic problems you’re on should be estimated with your surgeon and your doctor dealing with, smoking must be stopped, aspirin, vitamin E, gingko and ginseng containing stuff and certain anti-inflammatory drugs that can increase bleeding should be avoided.

Nose surgery is preferred to be performed at a private hospital nearby or ambulatory surgical center in some cases. Rhinoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. In most cases the incisions are just inside the nose. If there’s a severe septum problem or the patient needs the nostrils to be narrowed, there can be incisions outside placed inconspicuously. The bridge can be removed, nose and nostrils can be narrowed, crooked nose can be sraightened, tip can be reshaped and better defined, the angle between the nose and upper lip can be altered. At the end the incisions are closed with dissolving sutures that don’t need to be removed. Packs inserted inside the nose to minimize swelling and a splint is used to support the bones as they heal.

Recovery after the nose surgery, patient will be taken to a recovery room to be closely monitored following surgery, and then transferred to a private room. Patient may go home after a few hours or stay at the hospital for the first night. Before leaving the hospital, specific information will be given that includes how to care early after the surgery, medications to use and time for follow-up check. Patients are likely to experience a very slight pain or discomfort for a couple of days and swelling for a few weeks.

In the 3rd day control packs are removed and patients start to use a nose spray. On the 7th day control, splint is removed and instructions to massage are given. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully. Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of your plastic surgeon.

Nose surgery results are immediately visible, however needs time for the final result to appear. Over time, post-surgical swelling will subside. Satisfaction increases as you heal after the surgery. In order to achieve optimal rhinoplasty results, it is necessary that you follow post-operative instruction and do follow-up checks.
